Secret Shopping
I first learned about secret shopping when I worked at a bank. The bank would hire secret shoppers to come in and rate the service of bank employees, so after I was “shopped” my manager would let me know how I did. The secret shoppers were stealthy. I never knew when I was being evaluated, so the bank had a clear picture of how well I served our customers.
I now use secret shopping in another way: To keep myself informed of what competitors are doing and to stay abreast of trends in the industry. My husband and I also secret shop our own company, Selden Solutions, to more fully understand what our customers experience through Facebook, the website, search, and email communications.
Secret shopping can be an eye-opening way to learn about what customers experience of your business. Shopping others in your industry can help you stay informed of trends, hot topics, and provide a competitive yardstick. It’s an effective method to continuously improve your brand experience and a valuable tool to have in your marketing toolbox.
